6G, 6GHz frequency band, Approved!

IT Home reported on May 8 that the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) issued an official document today. To further advance China’s R&D, standard formulation and industrialization of 6G technology, MIIT has recently approved the licensing of 6GHz spectrum for 6G trials for the IMT-2030 (6G) Promotion Group. It supports the launch of 6G technical trials in selected regions to conduct technological research, breakthroughs, testing and verification targeting the typical scenarios and key performance indicators of 6G defined by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The approval of spectrum for 6G technical trials will strongly drive the high-quality development of 6G in China. Notably, given the limited availability of wireless spectrum resources, intense debates have broken out within the European Union over the allocation of the high-frequency segment of the 6 GHz band (6425–7125 MHz). On one side are industry organizations represented by the Wi-Fi Alliance and the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA); on the other side are mobile communication operators. The GSMA (Global System for Mobile Communications Association) released a report on November 20, 2025, stating that next-generation 6G networks will require up to three times more mid-band spectrum than what is commonly available today. By 2035–2040, each country will need 2 to 3 GHz of mid-band spectrum to meet mobile network capacity demands in high-demand urban areas, while countries with higher requirements will need 2.5 to 4 GHz. At present, most countries have reserved only approximately 1 GHz of spectrum. Analysis in the report indicates that all countries must take immediate action to secure sufficient spectrum resources for 6G; otherwise, they will face risks such as slower network speeds, worsening congestion and lost economic opportunities in the 2030s. The GSMA warns that without early government planning, consumers may suffer degraded connection quality, enterprises may struggle to adopt new technologies, and national digital economies could lose competitiveness amid the global transition to 6G.
